Let’s get inspired by the culture of Tanzania and Zanzibar, telling the story of a music celebrity that is one of the most loved among the local people: the singer Bi Kidude.
She passed away few years ago, when she was over 100 years old. Bi Kidude is one of the most unforgettable music artists that Tanzania ever had. She is considered the undisputed queen of Taarab and Unyago music, and experts of ancient rituals.
There are not precise information about the early years of her life. She was the daughter of a coconut seller in the village of Mfagimaringo, colonial Zanzibar. Even though, whoever had the chance of seeing her on the stage have been impressed by this little woman with an extraordinary voice and talent.
There isn’t any published book about her life apart from the known video documentary “As old as my Tongue – The Myth and Life of Bi Kidude” by director Andy Jones. But also the Zanzibari tourism community keeps memory of her: the luxury hotel on the island, ‘236 Hurumzi’, named their restaurant ‘Kidude’ in her honour.
